The Moss Story: Designed for Success

Their rises and falls, their swings and misses, and their wins and losses were all taken account of in great detail. For some it inspires, and for some it’s a life’s mission to finally decode the perfect formula for success. This is the Moss’ Story.

THE MOSS STORY

Great success stories were written by equally great writers inspired by the travels and interesting traverses of life of equally great people. Their rises and falls, their swings and misses, and their wins and losses were all taken account of in great detail. For some it inspires, and for some it’s a life’s mission to finally decode the perfect formula for success. But there isn’t a formula, is there? Each of us has a different set of variables that eventually set a specific algorithm to unlock its own unique mathematical equation in life to complete its own success story. But this, this is the Moss’ Story.

One of Moss’ founders and Design Director Cyndi Fernandez- Beltran was fresh out of university from the University of Santo Tomas when she met Director Robby Carmona through an event she co-designed in British School Manila. This led to her first solo event design job for Citibank’s Mini Card Launch. On that same year, she was handpicked as one of the many talents for a royal wedding in Malaysia with Gigi Bautista and Associates as an event and set designer. She worked as a freelance event and interior designer until she took and passed the boards in 2003, where she eventually met future Moss co-founder and husband Amado Beltran. She then headed the interior design department at Jonathan O. Gan and Associates, one of the Philippine’s top design firms for the next five years. It exposed her to a wide range of hospitality and commercial projects, and eventually mastered her way through it. She took up her continuing studies in Design and Management at Parsons, The New School for Design in New York City. She finally established her roots in Manila with her husband, Mado Beltran with their multi-disciplinary design studio, then called, Design Forum.

They set their humble beginnings as a home-based event and interior design studio in Quezon City with only 2 other designers. Frida de Ramos, one of the two original designers is now a Junior Partner for the interior design department. Together with friend, and Managing Partner for Interiors, IDr. Seachelle Chua, they worked their way up the interior design scene by initially designing residential condominiums and turn-key model units for the Ayala Land Group. They also started offering furniture rentals with specially designed and interior design-driven thematic seating sets for events, which was unheard of in the Philippines at that time. In 2011, they finally moved in to their first official office space along Granada in Quezon City with 6 employees, until they swelled up into 13 staff at the most and are in need of a bigger working space.

Moss Manila Office (2014)

2014 was a big year, Moss’ Design Director, Cyndi Fernandez-Beltran and her sister Happy Fernandez-Victorino launched a furniture and lifestyle store Moss Manila Home into the local scene, and moved the whole Moss Team in their own 3-storeyoffice building, with its ground floor as Moss Manila Home’s store and showroom.

Seven years later, the company now boasts over 40 core members and designers, over 70skilled workforces, and over 2,100 events & 400 interior projects completed throughout its 12 years. And in celebration of its 12th year in the industry, Moss rebranded itself and introduced new service hybrids in response to the changing dynamics of the “new normal”. Slowly easing their way through amore digital platform through Design on Demand, a more personal interior design service with different packages; and Virch, which are custom virtual backgrounds that are personally designed by event and interior designers for private meetings and celebrations. Moss also recently launched Curate by Moss, a curated intimate event styling and giftboxes for all intimate celebrations and parties.

In creating the Moss story, it’s not only about the number of projects made, the annual increase in sales, or even the number of successful pitches; but it’s more importantly about the relationships built between clients, suppliers, and employees, the micro stories formed within its family, and the impact it made into the lives of the people and the industry it rests upon. To our clients and partners who believed in us since day 1 and to our new clients, thank you for being part of our still-in-writing Moss’ Story.

"We’ve grown and learned a lot throughout the 12 years with you, and believe us when we tell you that we are just halfway through the book. "
